Pope & Smith Chelmsford Sunday League - David Marshall Charity Match

History

David Marshall was a Referee on both the Mid-Essex Football League on Saturdays and the Pope & Smith Chelmsford Sunday League on Sundays. He died of cancer in 1993 in his early thirties, leaving a wife and two young children. His family wished to do something in his memory so the Chelmsford Referees' Society proposed a memorial match between the two Leagues. David's family, including his father Colin, a well known Referee and assessor, were agreeable and the annual charity fixture between the two Leagues began. The family nominated the MOULSHAM GRANGE CHILDRENS CENTRE as the beneficiary of any monies raised as they'd had dealings with it through a family member. All donations collected are paid over to the charity FRIENDS OF THE CHILDRENS CENTRE.

MOULSHAM GRANGE CHILDRENS CENTRE is located in Chelmsford. It houses, and is a base for, the specialist services for children with GP's in the Maldon & South Chelmsford Primary Care Trust (PCT), Chelmsford PCT and the Braintree and Witham areas of the Braintree, Witham and Halstead Care Trust. The highly skilled and specialist staff teams aim to provide a wide ranging integrated physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and nursery service to each child's needs. The paediatric speech and language therapy service and the specialist nurseries are managed and administered from Moulsham Grange, with the wider teams working in the community. Children may experience a range of difficulties from birth or acquired later in life, through accident or illness. Each child will have an assessment to identify areas where help is needed. All the staff work closely with the parents/carers and preschools/schools to plan individual programmes to meet the therapeutic needs of the child. The multi-disciplinary team approach enables the child to acquire skills for life and an enthusiasm for living. The teams are committed to having the family at the centre of their planning so that programmes can be integrated into the child's daily routines.

THE FRIENDS OF THE CHILDRENS CENTRE was established in 1986 to support patients, parents and staff by raising funds to provide extras for the children. Over the years the FRIENDS have provided major items such as a large soft playroom, a sound and light room, video and camera equipment, down to smaller items such as therapy toys, teddy bears and Christmas and Summer parties.

“With your help we can fund so many important projects and extra amenities to enhance the environment at the centre for the care and support of younger patients. It may also be used to purchase additional equipment to assist the treatment that can be provided. We work closely with staff to ensure every donation is used wisely. Once again, thank you for your generous and continued support.” - Yvonne Carter, Charities Support Officer.
